Densely layered, and reminds me of Moorcock's "Cornelius Chronicles"--casual decadence amidst social destruction, and the sense of shifting realities, moving from world to world. It seems as if the protagonist, by the end, wants to be more than a passive observer of the end of everything. I want to read this more than once. An impressive and thought-provoking piece of work.
