You left out the fact that he totally chickened out on the ending and left the book sawn-off rather than actually concluded in some meaningful fashion. The first 97% was freaking brilliant, however. I was pretty satisfied with Mieville's ending. ***SPOILER ALERT*** DO NOT READ BELOW THIS LINE UNLESS YOU WANT THE ENDING RUINED. By having the perpetual train imminently poised to descend on the city, he left a kernel of hope, and set himself up well for a sequel. You're right about the freaking brilliant part, however.
