There is a typo in the eighth line from the bottom, unless "The" is supposed to be the correct word.

Some nice imagery and the poem is evocative, but this is pure mainstream, not speculative poetry.

I agree. I am also confused by the switch of focus--who is "he"?

I thought "he" was the lead in this movie the poem seems to be discussing (this *is* about West Side Story, isn't it?).

I think Joanne's correct, and there's no typo. (I actually had to read it over several times just to figure out what y'all thought was incorrect.)

That line is referring to the lead actor in the movie; it's saying he lives in the suburbs.

(Interesting that the written phrase "lead lives" can mean two such entirely different things, depending on how you pronounce "lives.")

I thought the same thing when I read it, nice to see I'm not the only one.

Perhaps it's not speculative in the strictest sense. But the poet's imaginings of the other actors, as if they took on characteristics of their movie roles, and the implied haunting of the lead actor by the celluloid image of Maria were strange enough to fit the guidelines - at least for me. (For example, Richard Beymer "Tony" isn't a landscaper as far as I know; he's still working in the business and has appeared on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Twin Peaks, X-Files.)
