Neile! Nice to see your name here. I don't know if you remember me, but you helped me with a little critiquing when I was still in university, through some online sf community, and were very encouraging at a time when I needed encouragement. Thanks.
I love this poem. Very mysterious and love the repeated -one words. Nicely rhythmic.

It is rare indeed that I read a poem I don't completely understand and still love it. Adored the language.
Is it just me or do the poems on SH get better and better and better as the weeks roll by?

For me, this poem is about the story of women throughout time--how do we find the trace, the track of them in formal history, which has typically focused on men and their pursuits? Through our own blood and bones--through the tread of women upon the earth (stone)--their heritage becomes our own, and they live on in us, their many stories singing within us all even though they lack the heirarchy of history or the precision of distinct names. In a sense, this "ambiguity" about the identity of the woman in the poem speaks to the nature of women's history, which must often focus on groups of women and their activities rather than tracing individual "historic" women--a community of women's stories, all intermingled. The poem can be about any one of us.

Thanks everyone for your appreciative and insightful comments! I'm so pleased that you all liked the poem.
Joanne, of course I remember you and still check your journal to see how you're doing. I hope to buy your book next time I do an amazon.co.uk order!
