That was a good story that told a great deal in very few words. I did find "M1" and "M2" confusing, though, because I associate it with British intelligence, so I read it as "contact M1" instead of "contract M1" and couldn't undertand what was happening. I liked it a lot once I figured it out.

In retrospect, I'm afraid the M1 and M2 references may further mislead British readers, considering the names of British motorways. (M1, M2, M3, etc.) I just didn't realize at the time ... Anyway, I appreciate your kind comments; I'm so glad you liked the story.

So if you ever anthologize this story, change the disease name!

if the main character was a heterosexual male, and the "simple" person wearing the leash was a female, would this story have been published?

I can't speak for SH, but it certainly would have been "publishable." It just wouldn't have been the same story. A woman with her brother on a leash has a different sort of pathos than a man with his sister on a leash. Though the image of the sister tearing out the throat of the ravening diseased lover would still be a powerful one, perhaps even more powerful than when it's the brother.
