This is a beautiful, haunting story that offers a lot to think about in both the scientific and emotional realms, in a very spare and condensed package.
Now I'm off to find everything else I can lay my hands on written by Alaya Dawn Johnson...

Just wanted to note that there's a bibliography of her work on Alaya's bio page on her website. For a starter, you can read her story Shard of Glass, which we published in 2005.
