What a haunting story, Sarah. There's a dreamy timelessness about it. I'm glad she finally went to the piano.

Mmmmmmm. Nothing special here. Now if the style was unique or the writer's world view very different then that would be something at least.

...And this is why it can be such a drag to allow anonymous posting.

It probably wouldn't be right for me to post an equally content-free anonymous rave review, would it?

What, you don't have the guts to stand behind your mindless liking for a story?

I was thinking more in terms of writing a 'bot that would find the new fiction threads and post random positive comments. We'd learn just as much that way as we did from "Anonymous" there.
As for "Straw" -- well, between finishing up ASZAS and prepping for the SH reunion workshop this weekend, I'm kind of in hypercritical mode at the moment. I liked the idea and thought it was well-presented, but I would have liked to see it developed at greater length.

Thank you -- really. I'd love to see more thoughtful discussion on this forum, and I'm genuinely interested in hearing what does and doesn't work for people when they read the pieces we publish. Of course, it's nicest to hear that people are seeing the same qualities that made us love a story -- or different qualities entirely, that make them love it for their own reasons -- but it's all open to discussion. I'd like to think we're always publishing fiction which is worthy and interesting enough that you can find *something* to say about it.
Or, you know, that your bot can randomly generate a response to.
In other news: so cool that you're going to the SH reunion workshop!
Which I can't think of without hearing:
searching through these carousels and the carnival arcades
searching everywhere from steeplechase to palisades
in any shooting gallery where promises are made
to Rockaway Rockaway
Have fun.

I don't think you should disregard an anonymous poster's viewpoint just because he/she is anon. Might be down to laziness not registering. I'm the same, just can't be bothered to register but my viewpoint is as valid as anon above and everybody else's. I'm of the same opinion about the story too. I too felt that Straw was fairly ho-hum, to be honest. To pull off something like that I think you do need, as suggested, a radical viewpoint/worldview or unique style. I didn't see either in Straw. The anon's comments remind me of a comment I read by Garcia Marquez. He said either a story works or it doesn't. Simple! I like that. I think Straw doesn't work.
