Damn. I wanted her to go to the sea, with Siobhan urging her on in a sad goodbye.
Beautiful story.

So did I. One of these days, the fish will get the girl.
Beautiful story.
Thank you!

I was satisfied by Rebecca's choice. She had, after all, made the same one twenty years earlier when Aoife was considerably more appealing. Gonads notwithstanding, I felt she stayed to finish her own life's coda. Ms. Downum left me at a nice psychological crossroads trying to decide whether that would involve a final series of Aoife paintings, or if it would concentrate of the birthing of Siobhan's career. Whether at sea or on land Rebecca was facing the end of an existence, and I was glad the cancer didn't ricochet her off her life’s established arc.
My little girls have plenty of the boring, glamorous, squeaky clean, pink-of-apple-cheek Barbie mermaids, so I enjoyed the thrill of seeing this macabre version (even if she was a Siren).
This was the first thing I’ve read on Strange Horizons and it ensured I’ll come back for more.
