Wow. Lovely. Quickly, quietly hooky. Simple, precise, and beautiful writing. Sags a bit in the middle, but pulls it out at the end. Wish I'd written this one, and glad somebody else did and that it found a home.
Thanks.

I don't know if this is any good because I started reading it, but then couldn't be bothered to go on. Does that mean it is bad? I find myself in a similar situation with most of the fiction in SH. I start reading the stories, nothing grabs me and then I find myself giving up and moving on to something else. Maybe this is a specific sort of fiction that just doesn't appeal to me.
Well maybe I'll give it another try and see if I can be bothered to read on this time.

Anon. #1: I'm a writer who's already been published by SH.
Twice.
Anon. #2: Mean it's bad? Nah, not necessarily. Mean it's not your kinda story? Maybe, and that's totally fair.

This is an exquisite story; I came here by way of Hannah. Gorgeous imagery; precise without being sparse.--Yoon Ha Lee

Dear Anonymous,
Yesterday you posted four anonymous messages on various of our forums in close succession, ranging from snide to insulting in tone.
I'm sorry to hear that you don't generally like SH's fiction. If you'd like to talk about why you don't like it, that's a perfectly valid thing to discuss on these forums.
But showing up out of the blue and randomly slamming other posters isn't appropriate.
Please stop.
thanks,

Good story. Nicely understated and nicely unfolded.

Jed you wrote "Yesterday you posted four anonymous messages on various of our forums in close succession, ranging from snide to insulting in tone."
I wrote one anon message, the one above, which is neither snide nor insulting, merely a comment on how I felt about the story. I didn't like it. It didn't interest me. Maybe it isn't my kind of fiction.
Besides, there were only two anon posts. You are talking rubbish.

I was almost afraid to read this story: The title is one of my favorite lines.
The story lived up to it. Beautiful.
