Wow, a modern fairy tale complete with traditional morality thread. The mermaid was both strange and warmly familiar. Its a clever inversion of the entrapment of the mermaid, or the sireing of the Great Silkie's son in old northern tales. I like the slyness of the second gift of the mermaid and thus the complicity of the mermaid in the folly, and I really really liked the end.
I thought it was evocative, well paced and lucid, and rereading it a week later I am surprised it has not attracted lots of favourable comments. Like Angela Carter without the anger!

I agree. I really enjoyed it; it's beautifully written, engaging and humane.

My first time on the Strange Horizons site and I was confronted by this beautiful tale. Immensly evocative and bitter sweet in its emotional intensity - loved it to bits.
All of us who have spent time at sea have felt the allure of the untamed ocean and this is captured and enhanced on by Ms Downum.
Thank you for this.
