Startling and creepy... when the old woman said "here I am!" I had to look behind myself just to be sure nobody was watching...

This is one of the best stories SH has every published.

Nice: scientist as voyeur, priest as voyeur. Then just as the reader tires of their tawdry dreams and fantasies, and dubious intrusive behavior, they are shown as simply human in failing yet still in touch with wonder.
Good pacing Joey, fine exploration!

Up to now, I think my favorite story on SH was They Fight Crime!, but this one just edged it out of first place.
The Machine is about a couple of guys who do a job and misbehave a little. The cool technology just gives them new ways to do a job and misbehave. Phil Dick would have loved this. Regular people getting by in a wierd environment that isn't all that wierd to them.
