re Gawain thinking this might be a gimme... I doubt he's thinking he can just cut off Green Guy's head and win. He (like us readers) knows that the challenge isn't straightforward in any way. Maybe he's curious, and crafty, and ready to see what happens after the first part of the challenge is fulfilled.
This is one of my faves, too, but I haven't read it for a while, so some elements of Gawain's motives might have slipped my brayne.
