Was "Strangers in Paradise" mentioned anywhere?

Nope, haven't heard of Strangers in Paradise. What is it or what's it like?

A correction via Warren Ellis... the "underwear perverts" phrase is not something he originated.

Strangers in Paradise is a comic book by Terry Moore. It's not science fiction. It centers mainly around two friends, Francine and Katina (Katchoo). Early on, it seems to be about the girls' relationships, both with each other and with other characters. However, it quickly turns into a powerplay/conspiracy plot with the two caught in the middle.

I'm not remarkably well-versed in comics or anything, but it's really well-drawn; I've never seen graphically depicted facial expressions that were so incredibly nuanced.

My older brother gave it to me to get me reading comic books. :D Do they have a list for "How to get little sisters to read comic books"? :D

Anyway, I haven't read the entire series (only because my brother didn't own the entire series), but it was really impressive. I'd recommend it.

Here's the Wikipedia site, if you want more information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strangers_in_Paradise

In response to your "boys' club" remark, The "Finder" series by Carla Speed McNeil is an excellent and highly imaginative piece of science fiction/fantasy. It's put out by the very small and independent Lightspeed Press, but has nonetheless garnered praise from Big Names in Comics like Scott McCloud. Highly recommended.

If you replace the cowboy hat with a spacesuit helmet and the Smith and Wesson with a laser gun, is it good science fiction?

Ellis’ Transmet is a poor rip off of the idea and concept of a Gonzo Journalist, and is derivative in so many ways of the work of Hunter S. Thompson.

It falls far short of good.

Depends on how you do it, friend. See Firefly.

Thanks for the information! I've requested a bunch of copies from the library, and it looks like the series might be right up my alley.

It's weird when I think about it... why didn't I know about Strangers in Paradise? I'm likely the ideal audience. I guess I have this sense that I should magically know about all the good stuff out there!

Hey Eric,

Wow, Finder looks quite apropos of what I was talking about. I'm having a little trouble finding it though, ironically perhaps. Should I look around in comic book stores or should I order it online somewhere?

James
