I'm interested in the topic of this piece, and am not saying I agree or disagree with the author's opinions, but the tone of the piece and the language finally made me give it up about halfway through. For instance, one guest character is referred to as a "dick-smack." Are there really no other words in the English language that could get the author's point across? That's just one of many examples. I'm not offended by that phrase or any others in the article, but if I want to read this kind of sloppy, choosing-words-for-the-shock-value opinion of Trek, I'll go to the fan boards. I expect more thoughtfulness and higher quality from Strange Horizons.

I am truly sorry you had that reaction to my piece, but that is my writing style and that is my approach to writing about television. I was selected as a columnist for Strange Horizons specifically because of the way I criticize media in my other pieces. Far from being "sloppy," I do spend a great deal of time on my columns for Strange Horizons, but I respect your opinion. I hope you respect the fact that I will not be changing my writing style.

I enjoyed the column though now I wish I'd seen Star Trek more recently so I could more fully appreciate some of the character explications.

I don't think she was asking you to change it, just expressing an opinion.
