The comment about Tolkein clones and space opera never meeting reminded me of Pat Murphy's book 'There and Back Again,' a retelling of The Hobbit in a space setting.
Where would you classify all the Middle Earth histories? Under prequels, or family written sequels would be my guess. There might be a reason for another category, unrevised variations. Stephen King's The Stand would also fit in there.

A couple more adaptations:
* novel -> musical concept album -> movie (The War of the Worlds, NB Jeff Wayne's planned movie with a THE, not Spielberg's WITHOUT)
* game -> books/movie (Dungeons & Dragons) (and plenty of examples of the reverse)

Kvon - that Murphy book sounds like a ton o' fun! I should have realized as I was writing that comment that, rather than immovable opposites, those two things were the basis for what sounds like an entertaining collision of themes.

I didn't quite understand what you were referring to, re: The Stand. As I recall, King wrote the book, it was cut down for first publication, he later released the uncut version, and then a miniseries was made. Something else here I'm missing?

Mike - thanks for the suggestions, I'll add them when I have the chance. I don't have a category yet for a *chain* of adaptations. Like the Jeff Wayne example, where the subsequent items are clearly not based on the original anymore (there was a Jeff Wayne War of the Worlds videogame for example, and the recent Lord of the Rings videogames were pretty clearly based on the movies). This seems to be the exception though - most of the adaptations that I can think of are based on originals that are so popular and indelibly stamped in the imagination that it makes more sense to return to that original for inspiration.
