About the success of Eragon, I’ve heard it speculated that the kid’s parents bought tons of books to give the impression that it was more popular than it really was (intending to catch the eye of a big publisher.) I don’t know if that’s true (but I’ll always perpetuate a rumor). Has anyone else heard the same?

If anybody reading this article does decide to go the DIY route, please God hire an editor. It's just embarrassing reading self-published books that misspell their own titles.
When I worked for the Writers' Federation of Nova Scotia, a lot of people asked me about self-publishing. Our advice is encapsulated here: http://writers.ns.ca/selfpublishing.html.
I self-published my first (and only) poetry chapbook. There are poetry chapbook publishers, but I figured putting it out myself would save me months/years, and would be inexpensive to boot. I made 100 and sold about fifty of them at three bucks a pop, making a modest profit.
I'll probably do this again sometime, though any time I currently have for marketing is going towards my published book. Personally I wouldn't do it for any project expensive enough that losing the money would hurt me, since I am tempermentally just not good at sales.
