I was intrigued by the speculation that sf poets are more influenced by the Romantics (which in this context probably includes the Victorians) rather than either 18th century neoclassicists or 20th century modernists -- and by implication even more than by earlier centuries. Seems a plausible idea, probably worth looking into ore.

Wow. Excellent Greg! I sincerely hope that this series continues. Deep analysis and interpretation of poetry is my weakness. This series of articles will be a sort of 'school' for me.

These series seems off to an excellent start! Detailed and perceptive analysis of genre poetry is rare, and I'm looking forward to reading more.

Thanks, all. Bruce and John, I certainly hope/plan to continue it.
Ruth, I'd say that SF poets draw on imagist techniques, and that individual poets draw on a wide range of traditions, but that overall, the orientation is Romantic.

Very nicely done, Greg! Your analysis of Wolfe's poem was particularly insightful, and I truly enjoyed the discussion of Rhysling himself. Can't wait to read the rest of the series (hopefully, ALL the Rhysling winners) -- keep up the good work!

Fascinating. I hope SH will let you continue because there are two ways to understanding poetry--vicerally (ie reading the damned stuff) and having a knowledgable Virgil take you by the hand.
Some of us like to do both!
You have managed to show me some things I have missed in those poems, and for that I send blessings your way.

I'd like to express my appreciation both to Greg for embarking on this series of articles and to Strange Horizons for publishing them. Libraries here in Wellington, New Zealand are not overstocked with the classics of speculative poetry, so the chance to read these works - most of which have been no more than titles to me previously - and then to read some insightful commentary on them as well is most welcome. I hope Strange Horizons will choose to publish the full series of articles.

I've often thought that someone should be doing an in depth evaluation of the Rhysling winners and I'm glad that Greg has stepped up to tackle this. Let's hope that the staff of SH will allow him to continue. Off to a good start with a fine lead!
