I loved this article--so weird and fascinating. The claim that King Arthur sent expeditions to the Arctic is just fabulous.

Nice article! Having visited Antarctica I know just how mysterious and strange the arctic regions can be also in reality. Just one comment: it seems strange that the story "Who Goes There?" by John Campbell is not mentioned, especially since it is (as far as I understand) the original story that The Thing is built on.

My favorite Arctic nightmare goes unmentioned: M. P. Shiels's The Purple Cloud, from 1901, which moves straight from the horrific isolation of starving explorer to the horrific isolation of The Last Man.

Nifty article. Wanted to mention a vaguely related book: Subterranean Worlds: A Critical Anthology, edited by Peter Fitting. I haven't read the book, but Paul Kincaid reviewed it in Interzone #199; it's a survey of fictional underground worlds, not Arctic worlds per se, but it does apparently include discussion of "Arthur Gordon Pym" and such.

(Though apparently it doesn't discuss Howard Waldrop and Steven Utley's story "Black as the Pit, from Pole to Pole," a Melville/Poe/Verne/Lovecraft/Burroughs pastiche that follows Frankenstein's monster through the John Cleves Symmes Arctic hole into the Earth's core.)
