Thanks for some really nice insights. This was a witty, informative article to read.
It seems like to me the real trick is to bring in the Hollywood establishment. I mean that's where the big cash is. I don't know if you've looked into connecting with filmmakers and producers on the film convention circuit (I know a lot of people in small press publishing probably throw up their fingers in the sign of the cross at the mention of Hollywood), but it's all about getting the largest number of general public people aware of your authors and books, and to that end, you can't do enough radio interviews, TV interviews, film festivals, and the like.
I'd be passing my books around at Aspen Film Festival, Maui International, and the like if I was trying to open my own publishing company.
Although, like you say in the opening joke, I wouldn't go anywhere near creating my own publishing company until a) I'd won the Lotto Jackpot Lottery or b) amassed a small fortune selling firearms to rebel forces in third-world countries.
You got to have money to make money.
