Mom considered the contraption over the rim of her coffee cup. "Where are my car keys?" The machine hummed for a moment and then displayed its answer in green block letters: "In the basket by the front door."
"Violence scares me. The kind of mindless violence that comes so fast and unexpected that there's nothing you can do about it."
The sign says CHURCH and at the top / of the hill, guarded by the granite names / of dead parishioners, it is the only piece / of architecture for miles around / neither tumbling down nor recently erected.
