About Strange Horizons and Fund Drives
Since its launch in 2000, Strange Horizons has pursued a number of goals. We want to publish great stories and poems that expand the possibilities of speculative fiction; we want to provide a space for in-depth discussions that help us to understand and extend those possibilities. We want to encourage and support new writers of SF from all backgrounds, and pay them professional rates for their fiction. And we want to continue to make all of our content available free of charge, without being dependent on advertisers or corporate sponsorship.
We are a non-profit organization, staffed entirely by volunteers, and so a huge part of our success has been down to you, our readers. Strange Horizons relies on your donations to stay open.
In our sixteen years, we’ve been proud to publish work by writers such as Saladin Ahmed, Eleanor Arnason, Charlie Jane Anders, Christopher Barzak, Matthew Cheney, John Clute, L. Timmel Duchamp, Hal Duncan, Amal El-Mohtar, Carol Emshwiller, Molly Gloss, Alaya Dawn Johnson, N. K. Jemisin, John Kessel, Ann Leckie, Kelly Link, Ken Liu, David Moles, Nnedi Okorafor, Yukimi Ogawa, Robert Reed, Adam Roberts, Sofia Samatar, John Scalzi, Nisi Shawl, Vandana Singh, Lavie Tidhar, Genevieve Valentine, Jo Walton, Alyssa Wong, Jane Yolen, and too many others to list.
This Year’s Goals
Your donations this year will enable us to continue to improve Strange Horizons.
This year’s fund drive target is US$15,000. That’s enough to allow us to continue publishing at our current schedule, paying our current rates, for the next year.
- Every $40 donated pays for a poem
- Every $50 donated pays for a column
- Every $80 donated pays for a feature article
- Every $90 donated pays for a week of reviews
- Every $200 donated pays for an original artwork
- And every $350 donated (approximately) pays for an original story
As ever, however, we want to do more! So we have additional goals:
- If we raise US$16,000, we’ll increase our pay for reviews from $30 to $40
- If we raise US$18,000, we’ll publish a special issue on Spanish SF to tie in with this year’s Eurocon in Barcelona, including at least two newly translated stories, poems, reviews, and articles
- If we raise US$21,000, we’ll launch Samovar, a regular special focusing on translated fiction, in association with the Anglia Ruskin Centre for Science Fiction and Fantasy
- If we raise US$23,000, we’ll partner with Sub-Q to bring regular interactive fiction to Strange Horizons
You can read more about our plans for translations and interactive fiction here! And anything we raise above this amount will go into our regular fiction budget, enabling us to publish longer stories more regularly.
Fund Drive Rewards!
Every donation, from $1 to $1,000, is hugely appreciated. As a thank-you, we’re offering some rewards for donors.
Everyone who donates will be entered into our prize draw, featuring an array of books, artwork, and other goodies. Be sure to check out the prize page throughout the fund drive, as we add more.
Everyone who donates at least $25 will also receive the first year of Strange Horizons ebooks (September 2015 to August 2016). Don’t forget you can support us at Patreon to receive ebooks at the end of each month!
Everyone who donates at least $40 will also receive desktop and mobile wallpaper versions of one of our cover artworks from the last year (check out the gallery here).
Everyone who donates at least $50 will also receive their choice of a Strange Horizons mug or t-shirt bearing our new logo (see it here!). (While stocks last.)
Everyone who donates at least $75 will also receive whichever of the mug or t-shirt they didn’t pick up at the previous level.
(And don’t forget—you can also support us at Patreon, where some other rewards are also available.)
As we raise money we are publishing a special Fund Drive Issue of Strange Horizons, eaturing stories by A. T. Greenblatt and Jenn Grunigen, poetry by Shweta Narayan, Ada Hoffmann and others, an interview with Garth Nix, and much more.
In addition, we have a special Patreon goal! If our Patreon reaches 300 supporters, as a preview of Samovar we will publish Lawrence Schimel's translation of "Terpsichore", a story by Argentinian writer Teresa P. Mira de Echeverría. Read a bit more about it here.
Everyone who donates will receive an ebook of all of the bonus material published during the fund drive.
How Can I Spread the Word?
Another way of supporting the fund drive is to tell people about it! We appreciate every article, blog post, and mention on social media. If you’d like to blog about the fund drive, you can embed our progress rocket in your page, to keep up with how things are going and make it easier for your readers to donate. If you’d like to speak to any of the magazine staff for an interview or feature, drop us a line. And thank you!
Contact information shared with Strange Horizons along with your donation is confidential. We will use it to get in touch with you if you win a prize in the draw at the end of the fund drive. In addition, if you donate this year, we may send you a reminder about the fund drive next year. If you wish to opt-out of this reminder, please use the comments box with your donation to let us know. At no time will your information be shared with anyone who is not Strange Horizons staff or sending you a prize.
A Final Note
Although it's a repeat, really: thank you. Strange Horizons would not exist without your donations. With them, we hope it will be around for many years to come.
