The 2011 Strange Horizons Fund Drive

This fund drive has now closed! If you're looking to support Strange Horizons, please see our main donate page.

Our 2011 fund drive has been a success! Thanks to everyone who donated. We'll be in touch with those who've won prizes soon.

For over a decade, Strange Horizons has pursued a number of goals: to encourage and support new writers of speculative fiction from diverse backgrounds; to provide a home for readers looking for fiction that expands the possibilities of sf, and discussions of the same; and to offer content free of change while still paying contributors professional rates, without being dependent on advertisers or corporate interests.

We've been proud to publish work by such writers as Saladin Ahmed, Charlie Jane Anders, Christopher Barzak, Elizabeth Bear, Bruce Boston, Cecil Castellucci, Matthew Cheney, John Clute, L. Timmel Duchamp, Hal Duncan, Amal El-Mohtar, Carol Emshwiller, Karen Joy Fowler, Lisa Goldstein, Theodora Goss, Gavin J. Grant, Karen Healey, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, N.K. Jemisin, John Kessel, Meghan McCarron, Farah Mendlesohn, David Moles, Tim Pratt, Adam Roberts, Benjamin Rosenbaum, John Scalzi, Nisi Shawl, Vandana Singh, Sonya Taaffe, Genevieve Valentine, Greg van Eekhout, Jo Walton, Liz Williams, and too many others to list. Stories published at Strange Horizons in 2010 were shortlisted for the Theodore Sturgeon, Locus, Tiptree and Aurealis Awards; six of last year's stories have been reprinted in four Year's Best volumes.

A huge part of our success has been down to you, our readers. Strange Horizons relies on donations from readers to stay in business -- our staff are all volunteers, but your donations enable us to continue to publish weekly issues, and pay contributors professional rates. Each year we hold a fund drive: this year we're trying to raise US$8000.

Fund Drive prizes

Everyone who donates to the fund drive this year will receive a free ebook collecting some of the magazine's best content from 2010, including stories by Saladin Ahmed, Theodora Goss, John Kessel, Meghan McCarron and Sandra McDonald, poems by Bruce Boston, Emily Jiang, Lisa Nohealani Morgon, Marge Simon and Sonya Taaffe, and criticism by Orrin Grey and Abigail Nussbaum.

In addition, donors will be entered into a draw to win one of our fantastic fund drive prizes. This year we have signed and limited edition books, artwork, and more—be sure to check out the prize page throughout the month, as we add more prizes.

Where does my money go?

Strange Horizons is staffed entirely by volunteers, so everything you donate goes towards the running of the magazine. At the moment, our costs break down something like this:

  • Your $5 donation will cover our administrative overhead costs for one week
  • Your $20 donation pays for one poem or one review
  • Your $50 donation pays for one article
  • Your $100 donation allows us to sponsor a convention event
  • Your $250 donation is the average amount we pay for a new story
  • Your $400 donation pays for an entire week's worth of material at Strange Horizons
