2010 Fund Drive

This fund drive has now closed! If you're looking to support Strange Horizons, please see our main donate page.

Since its inception in 2000, Strange Horizons has sought to encourage and support new writers, to provide a home for a vibrant new generation of science fiction and fantasy authors who showcase a diverse range of voices and perspectives. We have also sought to provide a home for a new generation of readers, readers who want to step outside the boundaries of traditional fiction. Furthermore, we wanted to provide content to our readers free of charge while still paying our contributors professional rates, and we wanted to do all of it while remaining volunteer-staffed and without being dependent on advertisers or corporate interests.

This September marks the tenth anniversary of Strange Horizons, and we find that we've had more success with realising these goals than we could have ever imagined. During these ten years, we've published exciting new material every week, and the material in our archives includes fiction from acclaimed authors such as Elizabeth Bear, Joey Comeau, Carol Emshwiller, Theodora Goss, Gavin Grant, Alaya Dawn Johnson, Jay Lake, Justine Larbalestier, Sandra McDonald, Tim Pratt, Sarah Prineas, Benjamin Rosenbaum, John Scalzi, Nisi Shawl, Carrie Vaughn, Greg van Eekhout, and Jo Walton, just to name a few. Stories and poems from Strange Horizons have been reprinted in major anthologies and been shortlisted for major awards, but even after all of that success, we haven't lost our focus on encouraging new authors. We bring you many of the brightest up and coming stars in the field; last year alone, at least 10% of the stories we published were their authors' very first professional publications!

A huge part of our success has been down to you, our readers, who enable us to keep our magazine going. Strange Horizons relies on donations from readers in order to stay in business. This September, we're trying to raise $7000, and we're hoping that you, Dear Reader, will be able to help us to reach that goal.

Donating is easy! You can find payment options a little further down the page. Do you know where your money goes, when you donate to Strange Horizons? Let's take a look:

  • Your $5 donation covers our administrative overhead costs for one week.
  • Your $20 donation pays for one poem or one review.
  • Your $30 donation covers the cost of our web hosting for one month.
  • Your $50 donation pays for one non-fiction article.
  • Your $100 donation allows us to advertise in a convention program.
  • Your $200 donation is equivalent to the average amount we pay for a new fiction story.
  • Your $400 donation pays for an entire week's worth of material at Strange Horizons.
  • Your $1000 donation would help us pay for a graphic designer for our upcoming site redesign!

Everyone who donates to Strange Horizons during the month of September will be entered in a draw to win one of our fantastic fund drive prizes. We have signed books (and book sets!) from many of our talented authors, free membership to an online writing workshop, a personalized Tarot reading, and more. Be sure to check out the prize page.

You can also win prizes for promoting the fund drive on your blog or another social forum-- check out the fund drive blog for more information!
