Strange Horizons readings and events in September!

Posted by Rachel Monte

There are a series of Strange Horizons readings and other events coming up this month, and if you're in the area-- or able to get to the area-- then I definitely recommend that you drop by! Our first reading was on the 8th of September and was organised by Tom Doyle, who blogs about it here.

The readings are a really nice opportunity to meet some of the people who have been published by Strange Horizons and to see what they're doing now.

Besides, who doesn't like the chance to sit down, take a quiet moment, and be read to?

First of all, we have a reading and performance event in San Francisco...

What: Writers with Drinks
When: Saturday, September 11th, 7:30 to 9:30 pm. Doors open at 6:30pm.
Where: The Make Out Room, 3225 22nd. St. between Mission and Valencia,
San Francisco

Featuring: Brandon Sanderson, Shailja Patel, Bonnie Burton, Brian Malow and
Kirsten Imani Kasai

Admission is $5 to $10 sliding scale, all proceeds benefit Strange Horizons.

For more information please email Charlie Jane Anders (charlieanders2 @ gmail . com) (remove the spaces)

About the readers/performers:

Brandon Sanderson is the author of the Alcatraz novels, the Mistborn
trilogy, the Stormlight Archive books and the stand-alone novels Elantris
and Warbreaker. He's also completing Robert Jordan's Wheel Of Time series.

Shailja Patel has performed her poetry from Lincoln Center to the San
Quentin prison. She is author of Migritude I: When Saris Speak, and two
collections of poetry: Dreaming In Gujurati, and Shilling Love. She's the
creator of a one-woman show, Migritude.

Bonnie Burton blogs at the official Star Wars website. She's the founder of
Grrl.com. Her books include Girls Against Girls: Why We Are Mean To Each
Other And How We Can Change and You Can Draw: Star Wars.

Science comedian Brian Malow is a freelance science video correspondent
for Time Magazine's web-site. He's been featured on The Late Late Show with
Craig Ferguson and in Nature, the San Francisco Chronicle, the
Washington Post, and the New York Times.

Kirsten Imani Kasai is the author of Icesong, plus the audiobooks Flesh Hell
and Tattoo, among other works.

About Writers With Drinks:

Writers With Drinks has won "Best Literary Night" from the SF Bay Guardian
readers' poll five years in a row and was named "Best Literary Drinking" by
the SF Weekly. The spoken word "variety show" mixes genres to raise money for local worthy causes. The award-winning show
includes poetry, stand-up comedy, science fiction, fantasy, romance,
mystery, literary fiction, erotica, memoir, zines and blogs in a
freewheeling format.

Hostess Charlie Jane Anders blogs about science fiction and futurism at
io9.com. She won the Emperor Norton Award for "extraordinary invention and
creativity unhindered by the constraints of paltry reason." She's the author
of the Lambda Award-winning Choir Boy (2005 Soft Skull Press) and the
co-editor, with Annalee Newitz, of She's Such A Geek (Seal Press 2007). She
also published other magazine, which is on hiatus. Follow her on Twitter as
charliejane.

With prices rising this autumn for many commodities like sugar and cotton, the country’s cabinet announced on Wednesday evening that it would impose price controls on food, introduce subsidies for the needy and increase the availability of fuel supplies.

*Thanks for the enjoyable read. How often do you write articles?
