Week 3 Blogger Prize: Jay Lake Flash Fiction!

Oh yes, we're still going with the fund drive (see previous post for more explanation) and we're still offering prizes to people who blog about it. This week's prize: Jay Lake will write an original piece of flash fiction, custom-written to a title of the winner's choice. If you win, you give Jay a title for a piece of flash fiction, and he'll write the story for you.
This is one of my favorite prizes, for a number of reasons. Jay's a phenomenally talented and inventive author, and he's someone who's been a Strange Horizons author (and supporter) for a long time. The first story of Jay's to be published here was "Christmas Season", a completely demented holiday story that we ran back in the summer of 2002. If you look at that story, take a note of the author biography at the end. In the summer of 2002, Jay had only a handful of publication credits. Compare that with his website, which currently notes that he's the award-winning author of ten novels and over 250 published short stories. He's got a Campbell Award and a handful of Hugo and World Fantasy nominations, and his most recent novel Green has been getting great reviews.
And, you know. When knew him when. I would never in a million years claim that we were responsible for Jay being a success today--he's a success today because he's talented and he's worked really hard. But my point is, we knew him back then, and if you'd been reading Strange Horizons back in 2002 and 2003, you'd have known him back then too. And Jay's just one of the many authors we're proud to have known as brilliant short story writers before they were successful novelists. (I'm afraid to start naming names in case I leave anyone out! But glance back through our fiction archives and see if you recognize anyone else.)
So talk up the fund drive! Even though we've met our goal, we're still open for business, and you can still enter to win fabulous prizes and know that you're helping a magazine that actively encourages the next generation of amazing science fiction and fantasy writers. Blog about us between now and the end of the day on Sunday (August 23rd) and you might also win a custom-written piece of flash fiction by Jay Lake. Who wouldn't want that?

Now that it is September it would be nice to see the final result. It also felt that in the last days of August the total was not updated anymore... and the activity on this blog also stopped...
