Positions available at Strange Horizons

Art Director

Strange Horizons is looking for an Art Director! This is a new role and is likely to develop over time, but at present we envisage the following core responsibilities, with a time commitment of approximately five hours per week. Communication will primarily be over email, with occasional teleconferences (Skype or similar).

  • Liaising with the fiction editors to understand their goals for artwork to accompany Strange Horizons stories (one story per month)
  • Identifying artists, briefing them, and managing feedback, as their point of contact with the magazine
  • Consulting on occasional art and illustration projects in other departments and for the site overall

SF artwork is often conservative and has often failed to fairly represent diversity in SF (both in terms of the subjects depicted and the background of the artists); we want to hear from applicants who are enthusiastic about working against this bias.

Ideally applicants will also have some familiarity with the kinds of material published in Strange Horizons, and some relevant experience in art and design.

Please note that, like other positions at Strange Horizons, this is an unpaid volunteer job.

The deadline for applications is Sunday 21 December 2014. If you are interested in applying, please email art@strangehorizons.com with the subject line, "ART DIRECTOR: ". Please include a brief overview of your experience and reasons for applying, and please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We look forward to hearing from you!

Poetry Editors

Strange Horizons is looking for two Poetry Editors. In this role you will be responsible for selecting, editing, and scheduling poems for publication in Strange Horizons. The poetry department operates on a rota system, so you would be responsible for dealing with three months' worth of submissions in a year, at four-monthly intervals.

Applicants should have a strong interest in speculative poetry, a commitment to showcasing diverse and marginalised voices, and be able to commit to 5-10 hours' work per week during their 'on' months, and a few hours per month otherwise. Previous editorial experience would be beneficial, but is not required. We are especially interested in applicants who will bring significantly different perspectives to the magazine than the current editors; we are looking for a diversity of voices and experiences of race, gender, sexuality, and disability from our staff as well as in the poems we publish. Please note that this position, like others at Strange Horizons, is an unpaid, volunteer position.

If interested, please send a CV and cover letter to poetry@strangehorizons.com using the subject line "POETRY EDITOR CANDIDATE: your name here." Please include a brief overview of your experience and reasons for applying, and feel free to ask any questions you may have. We look forward to hearing from you.
