Novels

The Curse of Chalion The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold

In a strong departure from her Miles Vorkosigan works, Lois McMaster Bujold steps again into the fantasy genre with this fascinating tale of Cazaril, a crippled soldier who wades into court intrigue as the tutor of a princess and finds himself in need of becoming a hero. - NB

American Gods American Gods by Neil Gaiman.

Bryan Hollerbach wrote an article/review in Strange Horizons regarding Neil's work on 10/15/01. The archived article is available here.

Perdido Street Station Perdido Street Station by China Mieville

Cheryl Morgan interviewed China for Strange Horizons back in October... you can read the interview here.

Strange Horizons also reviewed Perdido Street Station here.

Passage Passage by Connie Willis

'...if the dying were facing annihilation, why didn't they say, "It's over!" or, "I'm shutting down"?... Why did they say, "It's beautiful over there," and, "I'm coming, Mother!"' -- Willis' book jumps into Near Death Experiences with both feet. Her no-holds-barred look at death is refreshing in a subject that's been done and redone. This book will leave you with sitting, staring at the last page and thinking. --NB

The Chronoliths The Chronoliths by Robert Charles Wilson

John Aegard reviewed another of Robert Charles Wilson's works, The Perseids and Other Stories in March of last year. You can read that review here.

Robert Charles Wilson writes a new twist into time travel, telling the story of a man bound by the future to solve the problems of the present. -- SP

Cosmonaut Keep Cosmonaut Keep by Ken Macleod

An entertaining and intelligent novel bridging two seperate timelines and plots intertwined between the centuries.
This novel was also nominated for the Arthur C. Clarke award... though Perdido Street Station took the award this year (above)

Best Dramatic Presentation

Buffy Season 1
Buffy Season 2
Buffy The Vampire Slayer by Joss Whedan et al.

The Buffy Episode entitled "Once More, with Feeling" (Season 6, Episode 7) - known to most of us as 'Buffy - The Musical' was nominated for the Hugo's Dramatic Presentation award this year. In 2000 (Season 4) Joss created an award winning episode called 'Hush' where none of the cast could speak - portraying how we can still communicate without words. In The Musical, a demon comes to town to do the opposite... everyone has to sing their words - and reveal feelings that would normally be left unsaid. More than just singing their lines, Joss wrote great songs for the cast... several of which can really sing. Even Sarah Michelle Gellar does her part to carry a tune here... though Amber Benson and Anthony Stewart Head really carry the vocals - even teaming up during one memorable number. Buffy Season 1 & 2 are available on DVD (click the images to order your choice) with more to come we hope. --NB

Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring by Peter Jackson (dir.) et al.

Jackson has translated nearly every element of Tolkien's universe, from a vast, sprawling history implied in the language and the actions of its multi-specied characters, to a completely immersive fantasy realm with nary a seam to spoil the illusion, to a quest that's worthy of epic attention. --Walter Chaw's review is available here
