[Editor's note: Many thanks to Dr. Shirley Gish for giving us permission to reprint Ms. Dorman's work for a limited time in conjunction with Greg Beatty's "Reading the Rhysling." That time, unfortunately, has elapsed. You may find this poem in The Alchemy of Stars.]

Sonya Dorman Hess was born in New York and spent time in Maine before moving to New Mexico, where she passed away in early 2005. She was part of the Milford writing group and was friends with Thomas Disch, Ursula K. Le Guin, and numerous other writers and poets. After her passing, her manuscripts were donated to the Poetry Collection at SUNY Buffalo. Known for her poetry, she was also nominated for a Nebula for her prose and was included in Harlan Ellison's famous anthology Dangerous Visions. Ms. Dorman won the 1978 Short Poem Rhysling Award for "Corruption of Metals," which, along with all other Rhysling winners from 1978 through 2004, can be found in The Alchemy of Stars.
